AVISON YOUNG 262 • SHOPPING CENTER BUSINESS • May 2017 "Our experienced team of talented professionals not only brings intimate market-specific knowledge, but deep ex- pertise within retail, restaurant and enter- tainment uses." Avison Young represents owners, inves- tors, developers and retail entities (from stand-alone properties and neighborhood centers to regional malls and large-scale mixed-use developments), and provides a comprehensive list of retail services that includes ground-up development and construction management; sales, leasing and tenant representation; and invest- ment sales and financing. Part of what makes that representation unique, according to Bomar, is that Avi- son Young operates like a true solutions provider — not trying to simply find a place that works, but a place that fits. "We aren't just working to help our cli- ents today — we want to understand and address their evolving needs for many years to come. We want to be a partner in that process, and that means listening carefully to client preferences and priori- ties, and thinking critically about how to deliver lasting value." Another critical differentiator for Avi- son Young is the structure of the organi- zation itself. Avison Young's principal-led, privately owned, collaborative leadership model, whereby all partners are stake- holders in the company, is a rarity in the industry. "It allows us to be extremely nimble," Bomar explains. "As a flat organization, we can be quick on our feet and make de- cisions promptly without having to wade through 15 layers of bureaucracy." It is a management approach that has been not only rewarded, but recognized: Avison Young was recently named one of Canada's Best Managed Companies for the sixth consecutive year. The program, which recognizes "Canadian-owned and managed companies for innovative, world-class business practices" and identi- fies companies that place an "emphasis on culture and people, innovation, sustained performance and strong financial results" selects annual winners through an inde- pendent judging panel that includes rep- resentatives from Deloitte, CIBC, Cana- dian Business, Smith School of Business and MacKay CEO Forums. Going forward, Bomar sees an industry in flux — and opportunities for retail real estate professionals who can adapt and help their clients navigate those changes successfully. "Retail is evolving faster than any other segment in our industry, and I expect that trend to continue, he says. "Restaurant and entertainment uses will continue to play an integral role in the retail mixed- use environment, and I am confident that innovative tenants, developers and inves- tors will be rewarded for their ability to adapt, create and embrace."
