THE WHARF 122 • SHOPPING CENTER BUSINESS • December 2017 The beating heart of The Wharf has always been the water, where the focus of the development, starting with early planning, has been activation of the mile- long stretch of shoreline. The Wharf com- munity is home to DC Sail, a sailing club and school, as well as the Capital Yacht Club. Dinner and sightseeing cruises are servicing The Wharf, and visitors can now rent kayaks and standup paddleboards at its piers. According to Ham- mour, high-speed wa- ter taxis will connect Washingtonians and visitors at the Wharf to Georgetown, Old Town Alexandria, Na- tional Harbor and The Yards. The "Wharf Jitney" will ferry peo- ple from the piers to National Park Ser- vice's East Potomac Park's recreation facil- ities and 3.3 mile loop among the riverfront for free. "With its close ac- cess to East Potomac Park, The Wharf allows lunchtime recreation at the park's golf driv- ing range and tennis courts as well as an opportunity to enjoy a cruise across the Poto- mac River," Hammour adds. Piers and parks throughout the development have been decorated with swings, benches, trails, and splash and spray water features. Farmer's markets and regional festivals will become part of future programming. Pearl Street Warehouse and Union Stage, both of which hold around 400 people, will feature live music nightly, while Kirwan's Irish Pub will also be a showcase for local music performances. The Wharf is intended to be a destina- tion with the capacity to host corporate events and conferences next to platinum concert halls and entertainment. With the mix of fine dining and fast casual, out-of- towners, concertgoers and water sport enthusiasts will have some of the best entertainment and food offerings in the city, all in one place. With the focus on local and region- al brands and services, the famed D.C. bookstore Politics and Prose has opened a 2,500-square-foot store at the Wharf, along with D.C. chocolatier Harper Ma- caw's first brick and mortar outpost. Cor- dial Craft Wine and Beer & Spirits has a location in the new development, as well as national brands CVS and Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. The Wharf also features services to ful- fill the health and personal needs of the development's new residents, including The Press, a locally owned dry cleaner, Yoga Factory and Blush, touted as the first Health Club for your skin. Every aspect of work/life/play has been accounted for in the development and execution of the Wharf, along with a variety of architectur- al, landscape, street and waterscape de- sign aesthetics that allow residents and visitors to commune with an iconic and invigorating urban waterfront. The opening of the Wharf coincides with Madison Marquette's 25-year an- niversary, celebrating two and a half de- cades of success in developing signature urban and mixed-use properties across the country. SCB Peter Cole is managing director, head of development, East Coast, for Madison Marquette. Visitors to The Wharf can rent kayaks and standup paddleboards, making the water a prominent feature of the center. Water taxis also connect the project to Georgetown, Old Town Alexandria, National Harbor and other areas.
