RETAIL REVIEW 46 • SHOPPING CENTER BUSINESS • December 2017 extra mile and pay an extra dollar or two in order to receive the best experience." When looking for retail locations, DMK's No. 1 priority is density. "We want to provide our customers with enough space to feel airy, but we also like for it to be small enough to incorporate an at-home feeling," says Morton. "We are interested in spaces ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 square feet. Beyond the physical space, we look for locations that go be- yond the stereotypical strip center — we are interested in urban and suburban set- tings, usually on a corner lot." While the company looks for spac- es with density, it prefers to be located outside of a city's central business dis- trict. "We prefer to be the neighborhood burger spot for our demographic," says Morton. "In the future, we will begin to consider opening locations at the best re- gional shopping malls across the country in different food courts, where we would be able to operate in a much smaller space, around 800 square feet." Each DMK Burger bar is designed to make the customer feel at home. "We bring to- gether exposed brick and high ceilings to allow for movement and flow throughout the space," says Mor- ton. "Retro lighting, like chandeliers with Edison bulbs, hang from the ceiling to bring another com- forting element to the space. At each of our locations, there is a bar with stools for friends to gather with a drink in hand, even order a burger or a side of fries. We always have a member of our team stationed at the front at a desk set-up to greet customers, giving a feeling of warmth and recognition as they walk through the doors." The next step for the company is a franchise expansion. "We hope to open our next five or six locations in the Chicagoland area in the next few years," says Morton. "Once we have a stable ground, we plan to grow into neighboring communities in the Midwest spanning across Milwau- kee, Columbus, St. Louis, Detroit, Kansas City and Indianapolis. After conquering the Midwest, we will then move both east and west across the U.S. by 2021." "We are lucky enough to have an in- credible team that is backing the DMK Burger Bar franchise concept," continues Morton. "Between Michael Kornick and his chef expertise, along with myself and our franchising guru David Grossman, we are what some might call the dream team in combining our passion for busi- ness and food in order to be a successful franchise."
