RETAIL REVIEW 26 • SHOPPING CENTER BUSINESS • August 2018 R egional mall mainstay LIDS — a retailer focused on pro- viding licensed collegiate and professional sports headwear and spe- cialty fashion items — has unveiled a new brick-and-mortar concept and a Custom Zone, where shoppers can design their own unique hats online or in-store. "LIDS started as a way to break into the highly untapped headwear market among mall retailers in 1995," says Jeff Pearson, senior vice president of e-commerce and mar- keting at LIDS Sports Group. "The goal was to allow shoppers to buy any hat at any time no matter where they resided. Now, it has evolved into LIDS Sports Group, which serves as a leading North American omnichan- nel sports retailer and the country's largest headwear provider, with more than 300 million hats sold to date." While LIDS has seen success through its brick-and-mortar loca- tions for many years, changes have recently been implemented to keep up with the shifting needs of the con- sumer. One such focus has been on the company's online presence. "First and foremost, our unparalleled head- wear offerings set us apart from other retailers, but we are also devoted to presenting a unified commercial pres- ence," says Pearson. "We provide a single, central- ized platform that creates the same look, feel and messaging across all channels and devices," he continues. The company has also recently un- veiled an updated brick-and-mortar design, and a Custom Zone, where shoppers can express their creativity. "Investing in a new store design that represents the next era of LIDS was an important step in our mission to evolve the customer experience and further enhance our omnichannel presence," says Pearson. "The new store concept consists of a very modernized space with ped- estal fixtures that serve as the ini- tial focal point across the lease line to individually showcase headwear LIDS recently unveiled an updated store design that includes modernized features with pedestal fixtures that serve as the initial focal point and individually showcase headwear styles that are exclusive to the company.
