CUSTOMER SERVICE 210 • SHOPPING CENTER BUSINESS • May 2018 launched in 1959 with a single shopping center in Blacktown in Western Sydney. "Malls used to use a traditional index- ing of brands," says Ruddick. "But with the overlay of new brands and new plat- forms we're creating, we have the oppor- tunity to communicate with our custom- er like we never have before. What we're doing at Century City, UTC and Valley Fair is a massive shakeup of our tradi- tional curation model to adapt to the local community." UTC San Diego has received a $600 million renovation, and Valley Fair in San Jose is undergoing a $1.1 billion renovation. Westfield's personalized services tai- lored to the customer and unique to the community go beyond the human element of the concierge staff or an efficient valet experience. In 2017, Westfield spun off its technology division, Westfield Labs, into a separate company called OneMarket. OneMarket is a data sharing network that links retailers with venues and brands to facilitate data sharing and to imple- ment new technologies, such as artificial intelligence. It's all part of creating a "fric- tionless" world that stands up to Amazon and upends the model of retailers running their businesses inside silos within a shop- ping center. From the customer's perspec- tive, the idea is that all of these behind-the- scenes efforts are felt, not seen, inside a Westfield center. "We're infusing people's lifestyle to bring together an ecosystem of health and wellness, food and entertainment," says Ruddick. "We have approximately 40 new retailers at Century City now, all because retailers are seeing our brand in a different light. We want to be relevant, provide an unbelievable level of service, and infuse into the community. That's how we want people to define what we're doing. We don't want people to say, 'they're a mall developer' because we're not purely retail. Retail is a function that's just one part of the places that the new customer is look- ing for." SCB Westfield has rolled out a VIP program at Westfield Century City designed for shoppers who want privacy and exclusive service, including one-on-one meetings with associates at any of the center's stores.
