Rosenthal: The developer did an amaz- ing job, it's just getting people to shop here underground. It took a long time for New Yorkers to shop multi-level — we're so used to shopping ground floor retail. Besides Time Warner [Center], there's really no successful multi-level retail here in New York. Maybe now Herald Center. We have to get people to come down- stairs. It's training them. This happens in other cities around the world, but it's not how New Yorkers generally shop. Stephanou: Looking at downtown, for any of those who have not seen Eataly at World Trade Center… wow. It is abso- lutely amazing. People live there so they are using it. From a tourism standpoint, it is so exciting. The first day it opened, I didn't know what to expect. All the sit- down venues have views out of the various parts of the city at different angles. That I think is great, and it is on the third floor. It's an example of if you have the right re- tailer in the right place. Food is certainly one of those venues that I think people will visit on different levels. That was a very successful move for Eataly. SCB: How are the city's food halls doing? Stephanou: Very well. White: At The Plaza [Hotel], maybe 20 percent [of venues] don't make it and they sort of weed themselves out. I go there maybe every other day because I have an office across the street.
